The Engagers: 2013 Edition

The Engagers

Earlier this year I found myself in an alley in the SOMISSPO neighborhood of San Francisco with a camera around my neck coaching David Spark to embody his inner superhero. A few days later I hired my sister’s wedding photographer to drag Lee Odden out of his heated office into the Minnesota winter for a frigid photoshoot. And so began my quest to find, photograph and interview The Engagers: Earth’s Mightiest Marketers.

Over the course of 2013, I had the pleasure of interviewing some of the coolest people I know in my profession. I was repeatedly honored that these brave souls willingly participated in my somewhat hair-brained idea to create a superhero team of experts we can all look to for practical advice and guiding vision. Today, I’m thrilled to share this compilation of 16 interviews which will take you from high-level strategy straight down into the tactical weeds of influencer outreach and engagement.

My goal was to answer one question in as many ways as possible: How do I engage with people who are important to my business? At the highest level, what we learned from these sixteen Engagers is that online influencers and industry VIPs are people too. If you want them to be involved in your marketing, you need to build a relationship with them.

The individual interviews go into more detail, but the bottom line is that modern marketers are as focused on building relationships with the right people as they are with automation, content and advertising. In fact the more integrated marketing becomes, the more these four areas begin melding to forge today’s marketing landscape. Don’t take my word for it, read these sixteen amazing interviews and see what you think!

No team of superheroes operates alone. The Engagers would simply not have been possible without the help of Jennifer Mak who perfected each photograph and expertly tracked down Tonia Ries in the middle of Time Square for me. Alison King became our Toronto correspondent, photographing all three Engagers based there.

Pierre-Loic Assayag, David Chancogne and Nicolas Chabot all kindly transformed serious business meetings into funky photoshoots and interviews so we could get Engagers from far away places like London and Boston. And last but not least, Eva Papadimitriou who came up with the concept of this magazine and the corresponding 2014 calendar (which you should download if you haven’t already)!

I hope these interviews delight and inspire you. If they do, please share them with your network and let us know how your approach to influencer engagement and relationship building has evolved.
